#2. BE BRAND NEUTRAL FOR GROCERY AND HOUSEHOLD GOOD ITEMS

Does it really matter whether that last package of Baby Spinach came from Food Basics, Loblaws, Sobeyes or Longos?  It tastes pretty much the same wherever you buy it right?  RIGHT.

Take advantage of the Flyers that are sent to your door.  And of course of www.flyerland.ca as specified above to seek that preferred product – that Dr. Oetker’s pizza might be on special at Shoppers, Wal-Mart, Food Basics or Metro at any given time – just look out for it!

If you don’t need to buy that Coffee Machine, Espresso Dining Table or Electric Drill right away, then start scouting and scoping out the flyers for the next 2-6 weeks – you are bound to see it on special at Kitchen Stuff Plus, Canadian Tire, Home Depot, Wal-Mart, Zellers or Lowes.

Even better, you can segment your grocery shopping in the following way to find additional savings:

– ASIAN, CHINESE OR ORIENTAL MARKET AND GROCERY STORES for Fruits, Vegetables, Ethnic / International Ingredients, Meats and Seafood.  Great savings on fruits and veg e.g. 3 English cucumbers for $1, White mushrooms for $1 and Chinese Bok Choi for $1.50.

– REGULAR SUPERMARKETS AND GROCERY STORES for Bread, Pasta, Preserved Goods, Condiments, Salad Dressings, Snacks and Sweets.

– FOR GUARANTEED FRESH AND WHOLESOME INGREDIENTS, buy your fresh produce – fruits, vegetables and meats from local farms and farmers markets if available for guaranteed freshness.  If you are looking for Bread and Pasta that has no preservatives and is freshly made, go to local bakeries, delis and European eateries.    There are also organic grocery stores cropping up across the city and outside of the city – Nature’s Emporium is one of the biggest ones that is located just outside of the GTA in Newmarket.

#3.  “KILL TWO BIRDS WITH ONE STONE”, WHY NOT 3, 4 or 5?

Of course with these rising “daylight robbery” gas prices, service fees, parking rates and cover charges – we need to be even more selective when we decide to drive to the local grocery store, or across the city to a favorite restaurant or to attend a friend’s birthday downtown.  Why not plan your trip in a SMART way so that you can kill 2, 3 or 4 birds with 1 stone?

For example, it is Saturday morning and you have 4 errands (pick up dry cleaning, dental appointment, RBC bank visit and Home Depot) to run before closing time, a casual birthday dinner to attend  downtown and then off to a friend’s house in North York for a pot-luck dessert.  Oh yes, and you need to gas up also!

WAIT!  Before you head out, use the Internet to PLAN YOUR DAY AND NIGHT to save time, simplify and make sure you find the most convenient sequence with regards to route, rush hour times, parking and traffic.

  • Therefore go online to research the closest RBC branch closest to your dentist and dry cleaning (so not to double-back on yourself) and check the closing time for that branch on Saturday.
  • Find the nearest Home Depot en route to pick up the much needed drill and saw for your Sunday DIY project at home.
  • Give yourself two options, if you have enough time to go home to freshen up then do that, if not then go direct to the birthday dinner downtown.
  • Find the nearest Metro or a preferred dessert place close to your friend’s place to pick up a cake or sweet to bring to the pot-luck gathering.
  • Check the weather since this is Canada!

Imagine you didn’t plan your day before heading out – you would end up having a bad day, most likely be in a bad mood by the time you reached the dinner having been scrambling in traffic, getting wet in the parking lot while darting across to the store, and may have made a wasted trip or two only to find they didn’t stock the drill you needed or that the Metro was actually closed!
